I came across this really interesting video on YouTube that explores several lesser known figures of black history. I’d recommend you watch this really informative video – I’ve linked it here. Jean-Louis Michel’s story really stuck out to me as an amazing story that I had never heard. A little bit about him:

Under the guidance of a fencing master, Jean-Louis honed his skills and became one of the school’s top students. His relentless practice and natural talent led him to pass his examination at a young age, becoming one of, if not the, youngest fencing master ever at the time.

In his youth, Jean-Louis took part in a winner take all tournament to the death. In the final Jean-Louis, a slight man of around 5′ 2″, dueled for 1 whole hour with a Spanish opponent who was 6 ft tall. Then as the Spaniard lost concentration Jean-Louis finished him.

Jean-Louis joined Napoleon’s army and participated in over thirty battles. Known for his fearlessness and leadership, he earned the prestigious title of “Tambour Major.” He also proved his fencing prowess in a duel against an arrogant opponent, defeating him effortlessly with only a practice foil.

The Tournament of Reconciliation

During the Spanish campaign, Jean-Louis became a symbol of reconciliation. In a tournament involving fifteen fencing masters from opposing regiments. Jean Louis was the first to take the ground for his side. He went on to kill/wound 13-15 opponents, one after the other in a grim version of “king of the hill”. This diffused tensions and brought about peace between the factions.

Legacy and Lasting Impact

Jean-Louis’s reputation as a fencing master and his integrity as a referee in matches and duels were unmatched. In later life he taught that fencing to the death was a blight on society. He established his own fencing academy and continued teaching despite losing his eyesight. His legacy as a skilled swordsman, mentor, and advocate for reconciliation lives on.
